Music and Healing

The fire burns high, the western breezes flick the red-orange flames into the midnight indigo skies as the drum beats and the dancers sing and shake rattles. Strummed guitar chords fluidly guides the singers into healing chants and familiar songs. My body begins to feel weightless and I feel connected to the fire, the breeze, the midnight sky, and the other dancers. A deep sense of joy permeates my heart and the moment seems to last forever.

Music has been used as a therapeutic tool since time immemorial. Shamans and medicine healers of ancient cultures shake rattles, chant, drum, and dance to affect healing and create balance in the sick person’s body.
